A small-to-medium, secretive conehead with a slightly pinched cone that is immaculate beneath. Lower margins of hind femur darker near bases of spines. Ovipositor shorter than hind femur. Length 37-46 mm for males, 40-62 for females.
Similar species:
N. velox is longer; occurs earlier in the year; and its cone, in profile view, is straight beneath; lower margins of hind femur not darker near bases of spines. N. robustus and N. bivocatus are larger and have ovipositors that are as long as or longer than the hind femur.
Habitat:
Dense grass and herbaceous vegetation in wet places.
