Song: Weissman and Gray (2019) described the song as a slow chirp with 3 pulses per chirp, 150-200 chirps per minute. Pulse rate around 27 at 25°C.
Identification: A key to the adult males of native US Gryllus is in Weissman and Gray (2019).

Habitat: Under short oaks with fairly open canopy; males sing in the open or from cracks in stone wall.
Life cycle: Probably no egg diapause and one generation per year.
Season: In early summer, old adults (indicated by broken cerci) are seen.
Name derivation: Latin: "planeta" = planet or planetary, in refernce to its only known occurrence at the McDonald Observatory on Mount Locke in the Davis Mountains.
